Worth the money

Three calculators for what an install earns back, what sap is worth, and what heavy syrup costs.

The Worth the money chapter

Payback#

How many seasons an install takes to earn itself back. Type the taps, the install cost per tap, the sap per tap for a season, the sap sugar and your syrup price.

The Payback calculator

It gives the seasons to pay back, the syrup a season, its revenue, and the cost of the install. If you sell sap rather than syrup, add a sap price and it works the same way.

What sap is worth#

What sap is worth to the seller: a share of the syrup it makes, at the bulk price. Type the Brix, the bulk syrup price per pound, and the seller's share. Add the gallons delivered and it gives what is owed.

The What sap is worth calculator

Bulk syrup is priced by the pound. A gallon of 2.0 Brix sap makes about a quarter pound of syrup, and the seller's share of that is what the sap is worth.

Cost of finishing heavy#

What syrup boiled past the density you sell at costs you, in dollars. Type the syrup you made, its Brix, and the bulk price.

The Cost of finishing heavy calculator

The same sugar at 66.0 Brix weighs more, so every point over is syrup you boiled off instead of sold. Thin it back before it goes in the barrel: see Thinning heavy syrup, in the sugarhouse chapter.

FAQs

The calculator starts at 40 percent of the syrup's bulk value. Deals vary; type the share you agreed.

Set Finish at to 66.9 under Settings on the Calculators page, and the calculator measures from there.
